Charles R. (Bob) Smith, RLA, ASLA
Founder, Managing Principal

Professional Responsibilities
Bob Smith is the owner and managing principal of Smith & Associates. As leader of many of the firm’s most complex projects, Bob draws upon his deep and broad knowledge of the building industry through his experience as a landscape architect, urban designer, and developer.

Bob uses this experience during the community design process to help develop community consensus and public approvals in often very difficult and contentious situations. As founder and managing principal, Bob is responsible for a wide range of projects that include:

Town planning, urban design projects, infill developments, mixed-use developments, campus planning, and landscape development.

Bob has also served as a consultant to municipalities in the development of land-use codes and regulations.

Professional Affiliations
Bob is a member of the Congress for the New Urbanism, a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects, and a member of the National Home Builder’s Association.

Bob is currently serving on the Citizens' Advisory Board for the Transfer of Development Rights policy in Oconee County.

Lectures
Bob frequently lectures on land-use issues and landscape architecture. Recent talks have covered subjects such as urban design, traditional neighborhood developments, mixed-use developments, downtown revitalization and affordable housing. He has also instructed landscape design at Athens Technical College.

Publications include residential and commercial design guidelines for mixed-use projects and Pattern Books for Master Planned Developments.

Family and Community
Bob and his wife have three college-age children. Bob serves as a ruling elder in the Presbyterian Church of America and on the boards of several non-profit organizations.

Education
Bob earned a degree in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Design from The University of Georgia.


Jeni Key, RLA
Landscape Architect

Professional Responsibilities
Jeni Key has served as a design associate with Smith and Associates for eight years. As a registered landscape architect, Jeni enjoys working on a variety of projects ranging from landscape design to traditional neighborhood design and development. She has experience working within a wide range of municipal ordinances and regulations in order to develop creative design solutions that meet the approval of local governing authorities.

Professional Affiliations
Also a member of the CNU, Jeni has a particular interest in New Urbanist principles and how they work to promote quality diverse communities.

Publications
Jeni's previous experience working as a freelance writer has prepared her to assist Bob in the development of design guidelines for mixed-use and traditional neighborhoods.

Family and Community
Jeni and her husband have two sons, the youngest of which often accompanies her at the office. She and her husband have been long-time members of the Athens Church of Christ.

Education
Jeni earned her BLA from The University of Georgia in 1998.


Robert Davis, PE
Principal Engineer

Professional Responsibilities
Robert Davis has 12 years of international engineering experience working in varying management, research and design positions in different engineering disciplines. He offers a broad knowledge base of engineering design capabilities as well as creative and unique solutions to difficult problems.

Professional Affiliations
Robert is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Family and Community
Robert and his wife have six children and his family are members at Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Education
Robert attended the Georgia Institute of Technology and graduated from the University of Georgia (Athens, Georgia) with a B.S. in Agricultural Engineering with an emphasis in Mechanical Engineering.


Paul MacGregor
Associate

Professional Responsibilities
Paul MacGregor serves as staff horticulturist, environmental areas analyst, and certified erosion & sedimentation control professional. His responsibilities also include landscape design and the design of on-site sewage management systems. Paul seeks to inform and educate clients to various design and development options and the investment and maintenance benefits involved.

Family and Community
Paul and his wife have two children and he serves as a deacon in the Presbyterian Church of America.

Education
Paul earned a B.S in Horticulture and a M.Ed. in Agricultural Education from The University of Georgia.


Natalie Couch
Associate

Professional Responsibilities
Natalie Couch has been with Smith & Associates for seven years and currently serves as designer and office manager. She has a wide range of experience from landscape design to site planning and traditional neighborhood design. She competently works within applicable zoning ordinances and regulations to bring projects through the approval process.

Family and Community
Natalie is recently married to Chuck Couch, and they are members of Connecting Point Church.

Education
Natalie earned her BLA from The University of Georgia in 2003.


Edward Lane
Engineering Project Manager

Professional Responsibilities
Edward Lane joined the engineering team in 2005 and currently works on and manages a variety of civil engineering projects. He has experience in design and management of residential, commercial, and office/professional projects and experience in seismic/wind design and general structural analysis.

Edward is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ACSE).

Family and Community
Edward and his wife have a newborn son and are members of Faith Presbyterian Church, PCA.

Education
Edward graduated from the University of Georgia in 2005 with a B.S. in Agricultural Engineering with an emphasis in Structural Systems.


Andrew Whitehead
Engineer

Professional Responsibilities
Andrew Whitehead joined the engineering team in 2007. He currently assists in the design of roadways, water quality and stormwater detention facilities, and utility installations on residential and commercial developments.

Andrew is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Family and Community
Andrew resides in Oconee County and is a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Education
Andrew graduated from the University of Georgia in 2007 with a B.S. in Agricultural Engineering, having a dual emphasis in Mechanical and Electrical Systems.
